Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee suffered a heart attack while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mukundapur. He was moved there from SSKM Hospital on January 28 after the Calcutta High Court granted permission for the transfer. Currently in the ICU with oxygen support, Chatterjee is being monitored by a three-member multidisciplinary medical board. Doctors are assessing whether dialysis is required due to his existing health issues, including anemia, lung infection, and elevated creatinine levels.
Chatterjee, arrested on July 23, by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the school recruitment scam, has been in judicial custody for over 18 months. He was admitted to SSKM Hospital due to health complaints while in jail. On January 28, he was shifted to SSKM’s ICU before being transferred to the private hospital. His legal counsel filed a plea requesting a shift to a private hospital, which was granted by the court.
The medical board overseeing his treatment includes cardiologist Dr. Anup Khaitan, internal medicine specialist Dr. Soren Panja, and nephrologist Dr. Pratik Das. Hospital officials confirmed that his oxygen levels, heart condition, and kidney functions are being closely monitored. A CT scan was conducted to evaluate his condition further. Doctors will determine whether dialysis is necessary based on additional test results.
Chatterjee was also arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the ED's custody in the recruitment scam case. Multiple bail applications have been rejected. On January 24, the Calcutta High Court granted him conditional bail in the ED case, but he remains in custody due to ongoing proceedings in the CBI case. His deteriorating health has led to multiple hospitalizations since his arrest.
